From Ashewe Azetmir through Alnese subspace channels to Nyemba Ndinzi, Director of Cultural Studies, O’bonne First University

Two reasons prompt this urgent message to you, the second a personal one. But let me start with the first: The twenty-fourth regent of Alnos, Lady Ciani, has requested O’bonne mediation for a conflict that has been brewing between the native population and a group of settlers drawn to Alnos by the promise of easy wealth in view of the planet’s changing climate. I have acceded to her request, but find myself not completely up to the task. Aside from the obvious ethical questions raised by my long-standing involvement with the native Alnese, the problem is of such a scope and severity that a more experienced team of mediators is absolutely indicated. In addition, the settlers entertain some prejudices about women which can be quite trying. In spite of my long preparation on Earth, which surely should have immunized me once and for all, I find that they are getting under my skin. I would therefore like to extend Lady Ciani’s request for a more experienced O’bonne team to come into the mediation effort. I am sure you will know how to choose the right people.

And now I suppose the time has come for me to confess the other reason why I need your counsel: I am no longer just an observer here. I have succumbed to one of the great temptations of cultural planetology work and have taken a native lover. It gets worse: Soon, the consequences of our dalliance will force our involvement into the open. Yes, dear friend, I have not only succumbed to my blood-fever, but I have also, in a moment of madness, allowed for the conception of my first child. I know that you will immediately reassure me that my desire for this child is to be expected, since I am in the third decade of my life and have reached our normal age for child bearing. The problem is that I am not in a normal situation. The Alnese will want the child as soon as they know of its existence, especially if I acknowledge its Alnese father. I am therefore thinking of removing myself from Alnos as soon as the signs of my pregnancy become unmistakable.

You will no doubt understand the urgency of my request for O’bonne mediators. Time is running short, both for Alnos and for myself.
