Summative Activity — Overview
The following activities are required if you are completing this workshop for credit in a course you are taking. You have to earn at least 80 points total for the 8 questions in the summative activity in order to get credit for completing this workshop. If you do not earn 80 points on your first attempt, the librarian will send you suggestions for improvement and you can re-submit your activity to try to earn at least 80 points.
If you earn a passing score (80%) on the Summative Assessment the librarians will record your completion in case this workshop is a required assignment in a future class. We will be able to provide you with a record of your workshop completion.

Before you start, decide which citation style you will be using for this activity. Circle the citation style you have decided to use:
APA MLA
Notice about citation style: Along with this workshop, you received a guide to MLA citation. If you are using APA citation style in this activity and you would like to get the APA citation guide, please write to the library to request it.
You will need to use the citation guide to write citations in this activity. The citation rules were not covered in-depth in this workshop, but they are covered in the citation guides.
1. Read the article we provided in the Appendix section titled “Article to Use for the Summative Activity”. After you have read the article, choose a short quote from it that is related to this statement:
Protected areas, like national parks, can help animal species to survive climate change.
Follow the rules we covered in this workshop to properly format your quoted material. Review the section titled “Mark the Boundaries When Writing Your Draft” Scenario 2, for a refresher about formatting short quotations. Write your chosen quote with the boundaries marked by a lead-in and in-text citation and format the quote correctly.
- To mark the boundary of the quote, write a lead-in to the quote by mentioning the author and the author’s qualifications as well as anything else you want to say about the meaning of the quote to help your reader understand its importance.
- To format the quote correctly, put quotation marks around the quote and put the in-text citation after the last quotation mark and before the period of the sentence. The in-text citation must include the page number where you found the quote. For more information about in-text citations, use the Citation Guide that was sent to you along with this workshop.
A librarian will use the rubric below to score your answer.
Criteria | Proficient | Developing | No Evidence |

2. Imagine you are writing an essay about controversies related to protected wilderness areas, like national parks, and that one of the sources you are using to write the essay is the article we provided in the Appendix section titled “Article To Use for the Summative Activity”. Read the article again, and take notes in the PQC format that we recommended in the section of this workshop titled “Take Notes During Your Research”. Keep the notes for yourself; you do not need to send them to the library.
Write a summary of the article. Your summary should be one paragraph and should be 5-8 sentences. In the summary paragraph you will:
- Explain in your own words at least two key points from the article.
- Include one quote from the article.
- React to the information with your own ideas.
- Include in-text citations where they’re needed after paraphrases and quotes. (For more information about in-text citations, use the Citation Guide that was sent to you along with this workshop.)
- Write a full citation for the source in either MLA or APA format. We recommend using the citation guide for the style you choose. The MLA guide was included in the packet with this workshop. Note: Since you are probably writing your citation by hand instead of typing it, make sure to underline any words that would normally be italicized in your citation.
