2 Professor and Peer Mentor Meetings

Initial Meeting

The purpose of the initial meeting is a time to get to know one another and discuss goals and plans for the upcoming semester. Below is a list of suggested topics to assist with this conversation. Clear communication regarding expectations is key.

Suggested Topics for Discussion

  • Share your preferred name and pronouns.
  • Discuss the best method of contacting you and for you to contact your instructor.
  • Decide when and where you will have office hours.
  • Why did you want to become a peer mentor?
  • What do you want to get out of the experience?
  • What skills do you want to work on through this experience?
  • What areas do they see students having the most difficulty in?
  • How do they think you can best help?
  • How do they want you to help in the class? (e.g., help with class discussions, technology assistance, taking roll, and/or participating in or leading an icebreaker activity)

Weekly Meetings

  • Peer mentors and faculty should meet once each week for 30 minutes. These 30 minutes are included in the five hours of weekly pay.
  • This meeting can be used to share student updates and planning for class instruction and other activities to support students.
  • If you are unable to meet for any reason during the week, peer mentors should add this time to their office hours.

Things to Remember

  • Good communication is the key to any successful relationship. Be a good communicator with your mentees and your instructor.
  • You and your instructor are a team. Work together to help your mentees succeed.
  • Your instructor is your mentor too. Focus on what you can learn from them.
  • EEEC peer mentors are not to grade another student’s work.
  • If you have any concerns that you feel you cannot handle with your instructor, contact the EEEC staff and we will help.
