Foreword: Chief Terrance Paul

Hockey has always been more than just a game in our community, it’s a way of life. In Membertou, and across many Indigenous communities, hockey holds a deep significance. It lives in our homes, our hearts, and on our ice. For the Mi’kmaw people, our connection to the origins of the sport runs deep, and we carry that pride with us every time we step onto the rink.

The creation of the Membertou Sport and Wellness Centre in 2016 was a proud milestone for our community. This facility was years in the making, and was a dream come true. It has become a hub not only for athletic development but also for recreation, family support, and community gathering. It stands as a testament to the importance we place on youth sport, wellness, and the positive role that hockey continues to play in shaping lives.

That is why I see immense value in the work Lynn Levatte is doing through this e-book. Beyond the Ice in Atlantic Canada brings to life the power of hockey to build relationships, create inclusive spaces, and connect communities across our region. Lynn’s commitment to amplifying local hockey stories, especially those rooted in Indigenous experience, deserves recognition and support.

We have also seen the impact of her Cape Breton Eagles School Visit Program, which we were proud to welcome to Membertou. The experience was exciting for our students and reflected Lynn’s passion for education, connection, and community inclusion.

I thank Lynn for her work and dedication. This e-book is an inspiring read, and I know it will spark important conversations and connections for all who turn its pages.
