Sound Effects

Once all of the student projects have been performed or played, play the version of the video in the student chapter Wok With Sound.

(To turn on closed captioning, click “CC”.)

Ask students:

  • Did they identify the same points in the video where there were sound?
  • How similar were their sound effects to the ones in the video?
  • Which sounds do they think were recorded live (if any) and which ones do they think were recorded by a foley artist (if any)?
    • What evidence do they have for each?
      • (All of the sound effects were added in post-production.)
  • Why do you think many movies and TV shows still use professional Foley artists?
    • What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of recording custom sound effects for a movie or TV show instead of using pre-recorded ones?
    • Can you think of any kinds of movies or TV shows where sound effects might be especially important?

Next, show students the video in the student chapter Western Spaghetti and ask:

Would this video have worked as well without the sound effects?

Why or why not?

Sentence starters:

When I hear… it makes me feel…

If I didn’t hear… I wouldn’t…
