Pleasantville
Start by displaying or distributing the first two images from the student chapter Pleasantville. (The images can also be downloaded here.)
Ask students:
- What do you notice about the picture?
- Who are the main characters?
- What questions do you have about the people who are in colour?
- Would you notice them if the whole picture was greyscale?
Highlight that colour changes the way we think about a picture.
Next, display or distribute the third image.
Ask students:
- What season do you think it is?
- Ask students to raise their hands if they think it is Spring. Then ask them to raise their hands if they think Fall.
- Tell students that both answers are right! The picture was filmed in the Fall, then the colours were changed to make it look like Spring.
- Ask students to raise their hands if they think it is Spring. Then ask them to raise their hands if they think Fall.
Ask students:
- How do Spring colours feel different from Fall colours?
- How do we feel different in the Spring and the Fall?
- Do the colours remind us of those times of year?
- Are there colours that remind us of Winter or Summer?
- Are there colours that remind us of other times?
Highlight that colour changes the way we feel about a picture.
