Rationale
The “Diagnostic Survey” is meant to be administered in the first week of class to help instructors better understand their students’ reading and writing competencies as well as goals and motivations for enrolling in college. If co-teaching a course, students should only take the assessment once and the results should be shared between both instructors.
Diagnostic Prompt
This is your pre-assessment assignment for your INRW 0340/ENGL 1301 course. It will help your instructor design course content and support you this semester so your responses should represent your best effort and work. It will not count toward your GPA (grade point average) in the course.
This test consists of three parts:
Please compose a paragraph in response to the following prompt as a way to introduce yourself to your professor and clarify the goals you have for yourself in college and this course in particular. This response should be a well-developed paragraph of 200 words or more. Writing is an essential part of human communication; we can write to argue our points, process our experiences, and clarify our thoughts. What types of writing are you most comfortable with now? What has your experience of academic writing (writing in school settings) been so far? Do you have any writers or texts you particularly enjoy? How would you like to develop as a writer this semester? Once you have answered the questions above, you can also add any additional information you would want your professor to know about you.

Grading the Diagnostic
Parts 1 and 2 are multiple-choice and will be automatically graded. The “writing reflection” can be assessed/graded based on criteria determined by the ENGL instructor.
If instructors would like access to a suggested rubric for this portion, they can request one from Allegra: virginia.villarreal@austincc.edu
