ECPK 481

1

The BSU supervisor, site supervisor, and the student will be in regular contact.  Some contacts will be face-to-face, others will be by phone, E-mail, or mail.  The BSU supervisor will make an initial visit plus at least two other scheduled visits to the student’s practicum setting to observe the student working with children and to give feedback and to consult with the site supervisor.  The BSU and site supervisor, as well as the student, will collaborate on the final evaluation of the student.  The BSU supervisor will be responsible for evaluating the field experience and assigning the course grade.

Roles and Expectation of the BSU Student

We expect students will:

  1. Demonstrate the ability to support children’s learning in all developmental domains and all content areas as outlined by either:
    1. The Guidelines for Preschool and Kindergarten Learning Experiences (GPKLE)  available at http://www.doe.mass.edu/sfs/earlylearning/resources/#curriculum
    2. 2010 Massachusetts Early Learning Guidelines for Infants and Toddlers available at

    https://www.mass.gov/eec-learning-standards-and-curriculum-guidelines.

  2. Routinely participate in and contribute to the instructional process in the classroom in both teacher-directed and child-directed contexts.
  3. Write up 2 formal lesson plans and teach the activities.
  4. Observe and document children’s abilities and interests and become familiar with the classroom’s assessment system and see how they could use and contribute to it.
  5. Reflect upon and evaluate curriculum decisions, using systematic observation, documentation, and other effective assessment strategies in an ethical way to show children’s growth, instructional design, and continuous improvement of professional practices.
  6. Participate in all the program’s orientations and in professional development.
  7. Attend 3 evening meetings on the BSU campus.
  8. Upload your final field evaluation and 3 observation visit reports to your Google Sites Portfolio.

Roles and Expectations of the Site Supervisor

A site supervisor is a person in the work setting who

  • Has EEC Lead Teacher, Director I, or Director II Certification
  • Regularly observes the student’s work in the classroom
  • Coaches and mentors the student

The college supervisor, site supervisor and student participate and collaborate in a three-way discussion of the ratings on the final field evaluation form. Prior to the final meeting, the site supervisor completes the final field report for ECPK 481.

Roles and Expectations of the BSU Supervisor

During ECPK 481 the college supervisor will make an initial visit plus a minimum of two other scheduled visits for a minimum total of 3 or more visits to the student’s practicum setting to observe the student working with children and to give feedback and consult with the field placement site supervisor.

At the observation visits, the BSU supervisor will coach and mentor the student, by focusing on the 10 standards that are the foundation of the NAEYC Accreditation system for early childhood programs.  The standards define best practices in the field of Early Education and Care.

Supervisors provide timely, candid and specific feedback regarding what was observed and their interpretation of the behavior and impact it might have on other people.  By asking effective questions, ECPK 481 supervisors can stimulate learning, growth, and performance improvement. The student should feel supported, empowered, and able to contribute at a higher level.

Supervisors will coordinate the final three-way conference with the site supervisor and the student.  During the meeting, all participants will collaborate in a three-way discussion of the ratings on the final field evaluation form used to determine the final grade.

The college supervisor is responsible for assigning the course grade and submitting it to the registrar.

The college supervisor will submit to the Early Education and Care Practicum Liaison:

  1. Initial Meeting Form with signatures
  2. Time Sheet completed by the student with the initials of the site supervisor
  3. 3 written and signed observations
  4. Final Field Evaluation form with signatures

The Early Education and Care Practicum Liaison stores these documents as evidence of practicum hours for certification purposes.
