Current and Emerging Trends in the Management of International Disasters

Published by MAVS Open Press and available for free as an e-book version. Michael Prasad and Jennifer Russell wrote a chapter entitled “Issues for Infant and Toddler Feeding at Disaster Mass Care Sites: Paradigm Shifts for Strategic and Operational Planning”

This work generated a change in FEMA’s Public Assistance Program and Policy Guide, which clarifies that “breast feeding/chest feeding support items” are allowable reimbursement requests when used in congregate sheltering, under Public Assistance, Category B – Emergency Protective Measures (p. 143). This should eliminate any perceived roadblocks or misguided views by the states, local governments, territories and tribal nations for the implementation of full family choice support for feeding of infants and toddlers.

Rusty the Emergency Management Cat

Published by York Drive, LLC and available in hardcover, paperback and Kindle versions. Michael Prasad and E. J. Yegelwel tell the story of an imaginary cat who dreams of becoming an emergency manager.

Rusty enjoys his home and his life as an indoor cat. But when a severe storm forces his family to evacuate to a shelter, Rusty learns how to help keep his family safe. Basics of overall Emergency Management are introduced to kids and their parents. This book covers the ‘before’, ‘during’, and ‘after’ something bad happens, as compared to just the emergency response timeframe of ‘during’. Also covered in the book are elements of belonging, kindness, and recognition of people with disabilities and access/functional needs. And at the end, there is information from the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) on how to prepare your pets for disasters.
