Introduction

Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly prevalent in multiple areas of modern technology. As it works its way further into the everyday lives of citizens, it is important for us to be familiar with its history, its current applications and its future developments. By understanding the development of AI, we can better recognize how it affects our lives and will impact the future.

The first chapter will explore the history of artificial intelligence, which begins with Alan Turing’s theories on “intelligent machines” that can learn and remember information. It will also cover the importance of heuristic problem solving in the early days of intelligent programs. The last topic of the chapter will dive into the details of how neural networks function and which tasks they are best suited for.

The second chapter gives the implications AI has in a wide range of technological applications, one of the most valuable being analyzing raw and streaming data to make predictions and explanations. Big Data, as it is called, takes extremely large amounts of data and analyzes it, based on previous calculations and embedded AI. There are a lot of different platforms for data management available to organizations that are troubled by large amounts of data to sieve through.

The third chapter deals with the future of Big Data. Quantum Computing is still in its infancy, but can theoretically significantly (almost instantaneously) speed up the computing process. This is due to the variable spin of the electron, versus the traditional 0’s and 1’s of modern computing. This has very real applications from medicine to fluid mechanics. At this point, quantum computing is only able to simulate relatively small molecules.

The fourth chapter will explain how AI machinery is used in important fields like manufacturing and safety development. It will provide some intel on the software that is being used to create these AI machines. It will also show how and why these machines are effective in today’s world. Next this chapter will describe how AI is used in things like cars. Lastly, you will learn about some of the future developments in AI machinery and where this field is headed.

The final chapter dives into the safety of AI and addresses concerns behind using the technology. Artificial intelligence and its uses within society are often misconceived because of ideas generated from modern technology such as movies. This chapter illustrates the many uses in society today, as well as any dangers that arise from these uses. Lastly, this chapter addresses concerns in future uses, which tend to raise more concern than most current uses, such as military drone swarming and other forms and if there is anything for civilization to be worried about. Currently the uses of AI are nothing to worry about, however future uses of AI raise concern.
