Course Introduction

Welcome to Flying with Russian! Please note this course was designed

for learners with learning disabilities, such as dyslexia.

If you find that the designed materials are not applicable to your needs,

please reach out to your mentor.

Course Learning Objectives

  1. To meet and greet people using the Russian language in appropriate situations;

  2. To be able to describe your situation using simple yet effective grammar and vocabulary, such as verbs, adjectives, and nouns appropriate to each situation;

  3. To ask for help, a solution to your situation, and follow-up questions using simple yet effective questions;

  4. To articulate your understanding of what you were offered and politely accept or refuse and bargain when needed;

  5. To make an offer, such as a solution to your situation, using simple yet correct and effective vocabulary and grammar appropriate to each situation.

Course Sequencing (Outline)

The course is designed around these topics and each week you will be able to accomplish listed objectives.

  1. Buying a Ticket

    • to be able to use cardinal numbers together with nouns for buying tickets in Russian using appropriate cases and vocabulary

    • to be able to explain a country/city you are flying to/from/through with appropriate prepositions, cases, and vocabulary in Russian

    • Lesson 1 & Vocabulary session – you will be able to utilize vocabulary in a real-time situation – buying a ticket.
    • Lesson 2 & 3 – you will be introduced to mnemonic devises and short-cuts that will allow you master cardinal numbers (1-20). You will be able to use numbers without any complications.
    • Lesson 1-3 – you will be able to buy a ticket, including paying for it with a credit card.
  2. Booking a Hotel

    • to be able to use numbers for prices and dates of your stay (a review of Buying a Ticket)

    • Lesson 1 & Vocabulary session – you will be able to utilize vocabulary in a real-time situation – booking a hotel.

    • Lesson 2 & 3 – you will be introduced to mnemonic devices and shortcuts that will allow you to master ordinal numbers (1-20). These will allow you to use dates (and the date range of your hotel stay) in Russian appropriately.

    • Lesson 1-3 – you will be able to book a hotel for the date range you would like to stay there, including paying for the stay and receiving a booking confirmation. You will be able to communicate with the hotel staff about your stay.

  3. Getting a Visa

    • to be able to talk about yourself

    • to be able to explain the purpose of your visit

    • to be able to describe your flight and your accommodation (a review of Buying a Ticket and Booking a Hotel)

  4. Packing Clothes

    • to be able to describe clothes

    • to be able to explain your preferences, ask for assistance, and prices (a review of Buying a Ticket)

  5. Checking Weather

  6. Unexpected Flight Delays

  7. Ordering Food – on your flight, at an airport restaurant, and at a store

    • to be able to explain your allergies and food/drink preferences to a flight attendant

  8. Getting a Taxi – getting from/to the airport/hotel

    • to be able to explain to/from places with appropriate prepositions, cases, and vocabulary in Russian (a review of Buying a Ticket)

  9. Lost/stolen Wallet or Suitcase – describing people

    • to be able to describe a person who stole your wallet (a review of Packing Clothes)

  10. Unexpected Health Emergency
