Documentation Replication
This page offers additional support for the Document Replication Challenge, due on February 22. It is graded as complete/incomplete based on your effort to meet all the requirements. The activity is worth 2 points.
What to Do
Use the tools inside of Word for advanced styling and formatting to replicate the example as closely as possible. Review the chapter/lecture on Document Design for a rundown of the tools you will need for this activity. The challenge will be tricky as you use the advanced layout tools in Word. https://pressbooks.pub/hayleyinhighered/chapter/intro-to-document-design/
You can start with this Microsoft Word tools video.
Or use the Google Docs tutorial to get start
Step 1: Analyze the Reference Image
- Observe Carefully: Take a good look at the reference image provided. Pay close attention to the layout, formatting, fonts, colors, and any visual elements like diagrams or images.
- Identify the Excerpt: Determine the specific portion of the larger document that the reference image represents. This will help you focus your replication efforts.
Step 2: Recreate in Your Document
- Start with the Text: Copy the provided text into your Word or Google Docs document.
- Match the Formatting: Carefully replicate the formatting of the text in the reference image. Pay attention to headings, font sizes, styles (bold, italics), spacing, and alignment.
- Build the Visuals: Recreate any diagrams, tables, or images as closely as possible using the drawing tools in your word processor.
Step 3: Fine-Tune and Polish
- Mind the Details: Double-check everything! Ensure that spacing, indentation, bullet points, and other small details match the reference image.
- Proofread Carefully: Review the text for any typos or errors. A polished document reflects professionalism.
Step 4: Reflect and Submit
- Write Your Memo: Take some time to reflect on your experience. What challenges did you encounter? How did you overcome them? What did you learn about using word processing tools for technical documentation?
- Compile Your Submission: Gather your replicated document and your reflective memo into a single submission.
Helpful Tips:
- Zoom In: Use the zoom function to get a closer look at the details in the reference image.
- Experiment with Tools: Explore the different formatting and drawing tools available in your word processor.
- Don’t be afraid to ask for help: If you get stuck, reach out to your instructor or classmates for support.
Remember:
- This is a learning experience: The goal is to enhance your skills in using word processing tools for technical documentation.
- Attention to detail is key: Strive for accuracy and precision in your replication.
- Reflect on your process: The memo is an opportunity to showcase your learning and growth.

*Task content generated using Google Gemini Pro with a Gem trained to “act as a technical writer mentoring students in an introductory course. Every prompt should relate to STEM, medical, and business fields.” The Gem was prompted: Write a how-to guide that helps students complete this assignment. Break it down into potential steps they can complete for when they get stuck. Provide helpful tips and encouragement. The tone should be patient and supportive.” 10/1/2024
