Drawing Descriptions Challenge

This page offers additional support for the Drawing Descriptions Challenge, due on February 22. The activity is worth 2 points.

What to Do

I don’t have a lot of additional support…because you need to prompt the AI and then use drawing tools to create what it explains. Think back to the Lab Activity 3 where we practiced diagramming (Here is the Slide Deck from that day).

Step 1: Embrace the Challenge

This project might feel a bit different, but that’s the exciting part! You’re tapping into your creativity and problem-solving skills. Remember, it’s not about being a perfect artist or engineer, but about exploring ideas and bringing them to life.

Step 2: Engage with the AI

  • Prompt with Purpose: Start by asking the AI for a technical description of an unknown invention. Be specific in your prompt. Do you want something simple or complex? Mechanical or electronic? The more details you provide, the better the AI’s response will be.
  • Iterate and Refine: If the AI’s first suggestion isn’t inspiring, don’t give up! Ask follow-up questions, request clarifications, or even ask for a completely new invention. This is a collaborative process.

Step 3: Sketch Your Vision

  • Pencil to Paper: Grab a pencil and paper and start sketching your interpretation of the invention. Don’t worry about perfection at this stage. Focus on capturing the key features and functionality.
  • Think in 3D: Consider the invention’s dimensions, materials, and how the different parts might connect. Add labels and notes to your sketch to clarify your ideas.

Step 4: Digital Refinement

  • Choose Your Tools: Select a digital tool that you’re comfortable with or excited to learn. It could be CAD software, a 3D modeling program, or even a simple drawing app.
  • Polish and Present: Use your digital tools to create a refined and detailed version of your sketch. Pay attention to proportions, textures, and any additional specifications mentioned in the AI’s description.

Step 5: Reflect and Document

  • Write Your Memo: Take some time to reflect on your experience. How did you interact with the AI? What challenges did you face in visualizing the invention? How might these skills be useful in your future career?
  • Compile Your Submission: Gather your AI prompts, hand-drawn sketches, final digital mock-up, and memo into a single document.

*Task content generated using Google Gemini Pro with a Gem trained to “act as a technical writer mentoring students in an introductory course. Every prompt should relate to STEM, medical, and business fields.” The Gem was prompted: Write a how-to guide that helps students complete this assignment. Break it down into potential steps they can complete for when they get stuck. Provide helpful tips and encouragement. The tone should be patient and supportive.” 10/1/2024
