Progress Report

This part of the manual provides guidance and resources on the Progress Report project, which is due on November 10 for up to 2 points.

What to Do

You already know how to write memos because you’ve been doing it on every project this semester. This is slightly different because the entire submission is your memo to reflect on your participation and grade progress in the class. Revisit your notes from the Project Writing Chapter for more on the progress report strategies. https://pressbooks.pub/hayleyinhighered/chapter/intro-to-project-writing/

Step 1: Gather Your Data

  • Review Grades and Feedback: Start by looking at your grades on Canvas. What’s your current overall score? Look back at feedback on past projects. What are your strengths and weaknesses?
  • Reflect on Your Experience: Think about your engagement in the class. How have your study habits and time management been? Have any external factors affected your performance?

Step 2: Analyze and Set Goals

  • Honest Self-Assessment: Be honest with yourself about your performance so far. What’s working well? Where can you improve?
  • Set Realistic Goals: What final grade do you want or need? Is it achievable based on your current standing and the remaining assignments? Set a clear and specific goal.

Step 3: Create Your Action Plan

  • Identify Remaining Projects: List the projects you plan to complete to reach your goal.
  • Outline Specific Steps: Break down each project into smaller, actionable tasks. For example, for the eBook project, your steps might include: choosing a topic, outlining the content, creating visuals, etc.
  • Set Deadlines: Assign realistic deadlines to each step. This will help you stay on track and avoid procrastination.
  • Visualize Your Plan: Create a chart or timeline to track your progress. This will help you stay organized and motivated.

Step 4: Write Your Report

  • Introduction: Clearly state the purpose of your report, your current standing in the class, and your goals for the final grade.
  • Performance Analysis: Reflect on your strengths, weaknesses, and the factors that have influenced your performance so far.
  • Action Plan: Present your plan in a clear and organized way, including specific steps and deadlines. Use a visual aid like a chart or timeline to enhance clarity.

Helpful Tips:

  • Start Early: Don’t wait until the last minute to start this project. The earlier you start, the more time you’ll have to reflect and plan.
  • Be Specific: Avoid vague statements in your analysis and action plan. Use concrete examples and specific details.
  • Be Realistic: Set achievable goals and deadlines. Don’t overcommit yourself.
  • Seek Help if Needed: If you’re struggling with any aspect of the project, don’t hesitate to reach out to your instructor or classmates for support.

Remember:

  • This is a tool for your success: The progress report is designed to help you take control of your learning and finish the semester strong.
  • It’s about reflection and growth: Use this opportunity to learn from your experiences and develop strategies for improvement.
  • Celebrate your progress: Acknowledge your achievements and stay positive!

Your report will be formatted as a formal memo

Memos are memos because they have a memo heading (pretty much 🤷‍♀️). Your memo heading includes the same information as an email header because the mediums are closely associated.

When you create the analysis, consider your actions based on the strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities revealed in your data.

*Task content generated using Google Gemini Pro with a Gem trained to “act as a technical writer mentoring students in an introductory course. Every prompt should relate to STEM, medical, and business fields.” The Gem was prompted: Write a how-to guide that helps students complete this assignment. Break it down into potential steps they can complete for when they get stuck. Provide helpful tips and encouragement. The tone should be patient and supportive.” 10/1/2024
