Hello HUMAns! Welcome! This class uses this OER (open educational resource) text for your reading this semester. It is free for you to use. All material here is licensed under creative commons open access licenses. While I am in the process of writing my own introduction to this text, I ask you to read the introduction to the text I used for this course for many years:

Additional Notes on How to Navigate This Text

  1. Access the Book (you are already here!)

  2. Use the Table of Contents

    • On the left-hand side (or via the menu icon on mobile), you’ll see the Table of Contents.

    • Click any chapter or section title to jump directly to that part of the book.

    • Chapters may be organized into parts (e.g., Part I, Part II), so you can expand/collapse each part to view or hide its chapters.

  3. Navigate Within Chapters

    • Use the “Previous” and “Next” buttons (at the very bottom of the page, in a navy blue footer) to move forward or backward through the book, one section at a time.

  4. Search the Book

    • Pressbooks includes a search bar (often at the top right) that lets you find keywords or topics quickly within the text.

  5. Use the Accessibility Features

    • The text is designed to be screen-reader friendly.

    • You can increase font size or use browser extensions to adjust contrast or text-to-speech tools.

  6. Download or Print (if available)

    • Some Pressbooks offer downloadable formats such as PDF, ePub, or Word.

    • Look for a “Download” or “Export” option in the top menu or at the beginning of the book.

    • You can also print specific chapters using your browser’s print function (Ctrl + P or Cmd + P).

  7. Engage with Media (if included)

    • If the book includes videos, audio clips, or interactive elements, you can click or tap to play them directly within the text.

    • Make sure your browser allows pop-ups and media playback for the best experience.

  8. Cite or Share

    • Each chapter has a unique URL you can copy to share.

    • Check the book’s license to understand how you can reuse or remix the content (usually shown at the bottom of the homepage or in an “About” section).
