1 Kinds of Writing

Take a minute to think about all the different kinds of writing that there are in the world. Jot down a few that come to mind. If you’re like most students, your initial list might look something like this:

List: Books, newspapers, magazines, comics, poetry

You might have been a little more creative and thought of some of the digital kinds of writing that are prevalent in our world today:

E-mail, text messages, blog, facebook, tweet, instagram

Some students name types of writing, like narrative and descriptive, that they remember from high school…

descriptive, narrative, persuasive, argumentative, evaluative

…and others think of genres of writing.

poetry, sci-fi, fiction, horror, romance, non-fiction

As they dig deeper, I ask students to think about kinds of writing they see (and even wear) every day.

t-shirts, ball caps, cereal boxes, shopping lists, letters, billboards

Everywhere we go, we see writing. It’s an integral part of our world. So, doesn’t it make sense to learn how to write well?
