Chapter 4: Chunking a Text

When reading, it is helpful to divide the text into chunks. Chunking is when readers split large pieces of text into smaller sections to make the material more manageable.

If the text includes headings that break up the chapter or article, each section can be viewed as a chunk of the whole. If the text does not include headings, try to separate the text into groups of related paragraphs. Use brackets and labels to group paragraphs together.

While chunking the text, it is helpful to ask yourself, what seems to be the general progression of ideas here? This will help you to see how the text has been put together overall.
