372 James Comey Still Won’t Apologize but He did Write a Pretty Good Book 2.0
Section One: If You Can’t Say Something Nice
Someone’s grandmother apparently once said if you can’t say something nice say nothing at all. The good news is I don’t subscribe to this person’s grandmother’s particular ideology. I certainly feel no compunction to say anything about James Comey as this book abundantly attests. However there is something nice I can say about James Comey. In fact there are a few nice things I can say about James Comey and in this chapter I will say them though it gives me no pleasure.
Section Two: The Wife Guy
Picture of Comey in elect all women t shirt?
Comey is undeniably a wife guy. Which IMO is a nice thing. So far as it goes
In his recent interview on Bulwark he-as usual- he name dropped her and spent time discussing how great she is and how much he loves and respects her. On the podcast Tim Miller had asked if he needed a therapist-because of all the criticism he gets-all totally unwarranted being the implication.
“. Uh on a podcast last Friday, my buddy Peter Hamby uh said nobody likes James Comey. You mentioned earlier that you get [ __ ] use on the street back and forth. I don’t know how how do you how are you processing that? Is that something that you’re is that do you have therapist? Is that something that you have to deal with personally? What what how how how do you react to something like that?”
FN: Comey Reveals All: Trump’s FBI Madness and The “86” Fiasco (w/ James Comey) | Bulwark Podcast
Starting at 33:29
Comey’s response : “Well, because I am a devoted fan, I was watching and listening when that man said that hurtful thing about me. nd I thought, you know, you bastard. My family, at least on the surface, seems to like me a lot. My dog died a few years ago, but was very fond of me. So, I I look, I I have to laugh. I’m married to a trained marriage and family therapist, thank God. So, I have in-house help.”
starting at about 33:53
So Comey’s wife, Patrice Failor, is a trained marriage and family therapist. Comey never tires of talking about how must he respects and admires her.

“I learned from watching her.”

Unfortunately the one time he chose not to learn from her was when she urged him NOT to do the Comey Letter and he mansplained to her just as he did to that alleged “Jr DOJ staffer”-see Chapter Why Did Comey Write the Comey Letter.
(33) James Comey’s Wife Reveals She Was ‘Devastated’ By Trump’s Election Win – YouTube
But again, the fact that he’s such a wife guy is admirable and very touching in all honesty. I myself-have no wife!-but have always been something of a male female supremacist myself.
Coda: True story-how much do you want to know?
How to Suck Up To Women | YOUTUBE EDIT | Female Supremacy University
I always had Comey pegged as a member in good standing with the Patriarchy-not just because he elected Trump which enabled the Right wing to achieve it’s deepest, dearest, wet dream in overturning Roe-as it reduces women back to the level of baby machines. But because the FBI is a very Republican place-which by definition means it’s a very patriarchal place-most patriarchalists in good standing are Republicans for obvious reasons. Also Comey locked up Martha Stewart for little more than the vibe that she was an uppity, liberal woman.
So there I said something nice about Comey: he’s a wife guy. Here’s another nice thing.
Section: He’s a pretty good author. At least I really enjoyed his most recent book.
Amazon.com: FDR Drive (Nora Carleton Book 3) eBook : Comey, James: Books
Indeed yet another nice thing about Comey is that his wife helped him on the book in terms of not just editing but apparently character development.
“…the interviews I did for the non-fiction book was challenging for me you know how how are and so like writing a fiction book trying to remember what the protagonist had said in previous books or in previous chapters or yesterday like would be a challenge for me like…”
Starting at 43:20
Tim Miller interjected: “how do you do that you have like a big whiteboard do you have a do you have an app on your phone that helps you with it or AI have you incorporated AI…”
Comey then redirected back to name checking his wife and extolling how great she is-again I find this pretty nice and appealing so far as it goes:
“No, it’s about choosing the right life partner. My spouse uh keeps all that online. We we start by the two of us talking about what might be a cool story and then we agree that this is what the story will be and I go off and write a detailed summary of it. So like a five 10 page capturing the how how it’s going to go and then we figure out so which parts of that should I show to the reader and when. Then I go off to write and she follows it on a Google doc. And the reason it’s so important is she’s smarter than I, but she’s also read much more fiction than I.”
Finishing at 44:15
Again he’s a wife guy who freely admits his wife is smarter than him. Yet another nice thing about James Comey at least in my opinion. But again if his wife is smarter than him why didn’t he listen to her when she urged him not to do the Comey Letter? Sorry but it’s the natural question.
Back to Comey regarding his creative process-and how his wife helped him midwife it. Again very touching story-seriously.
“And so she says, I’m every reader.” And she’ll say, “Ah, no, no, no. You’re drifting or your characters are starting to sound like each other or this is repetitive.” I get that loving feedback in little bubbles on a Google doc and that keeps me online.”

Section: Yet Another Likable Thing About James Comey
He’s not just a wife guy he’s also a kid’s guy as he also went to his children for their input on the book-three of who are girls
CODA: Which is ironic on more than one level considering the central role he took in defeating what otherwise would have been the first female President in US history. And again don’t forget Matha Stewart who functioned as a kind of surrogate Hillary Clinton-again as noted in Chapter X Ken Starr actually had an entire chapter apologizing for not indicting Clinton-he had to admit being “arrogant while female” wasn’t actually an indictable offense.
Section: Yet another VERY NICE THING About James Comey
Another very nice thing about James Comey is that his main character in the book is based on his daughter. That’s really pretty cool, pretty great-really. There’s no snark. So far as it goes: ” You know, my protagonist is inspired by my oldest daughter who is the lead prosecutor in the P. diddy case today and so I get a lot of feedback about the story and about the particulars because I want to keep it current and they help me a lot with that. The character parts not sounding gotten good at writing like Tim, which is a challenge in itself actually just like sounding like yourself when you write rather than losing your voice. Uh, but having nine characters that have different voices, like do you have little you have little note cards or something that that helps you remember…”
He goes on to say that’s he based these nine characters on people he actually knew. “The investigator in the case, Benny Dugan, is was in all the books is closely based on one of my friends who died in 2006 from melanoma and was the best investigator I ever knew. was an enormous 65 250 deep Brooklyn accented, you know, brush cut hair guy. And I can hear him, you know, he used to call me Mr. Smooth, but he would say Mr. Smooth.”
Makes a lot of sense and pretty interesting-and I will discuss more below but it worked-it was an excellent book. I listened to the audio version-as I’m a Spark Delivery driver I often spend much of the day listening to audiobooks-and I was struck the extent to which this book FDR Drive came to life-I almost felt like I was watching a crime drama-like Law and Order only better; mileage may vary but that show was only ever mediocre for me! LOL
Comey discusses more about the extent to which his wife-and daughters, including Maureen Comey for whom Nora is based on-helped him construct the story-starting at 46:03:
“And because my protagonist is inspired by my oldest daughter and really a combination of all five kids that I can close my eyes and picture it and that keeps it online.”
Section: So Comey is a wife guy also a daughter guy who based his main protagonist on his oldest daughter who as he said at the time was the lead prosecutor of the Diddy sex abuse case. She had also been the prosecutor of: you guessed it, Jeffrey Epstein. Whose name has come up a lot lately to say the least. And one of the many ways Trump has tried to coopt the Epstein narrative and reassert control of it was to soon after Comey interview on Bulwark fire Maureen Comey.
Maurene Comey, daughter of James Comey and prosecutor of Jeffrey Epstein, is fired – POLITICO
While Comey. declared that he saw revealing the reopening maybe maybe not reopening of the Emailgate investigation ando so changing the outcome of the 201 Presidential election as merely. “very bad” as opposed to not “revealing” that he may.-or may. not and as it turned out it was may. not-be reopening Emailgate the “cataclysmic” choice-even though that was exactly. what DOJ protocols and precedents required he do.
Here I can’t resist quoting Schoenberg once again as it’s so apt for this moment. As he correctly says the two reasons we must never let the Comey letter do is that it truly is the biggest mistake in the history of mistakes-for which we continue to face the ill effects every single day here in 2025 Trump 2.0 The Absolute Immunity Edition. Like just yesterday this was the headline
FBI raids former national security adviser John Bolton’s home
See also: Weird HA Goodman take though being redundant to speak of HA Goodman having a weird take
But Comey would have us believe that nevertheless he still made the right decision in doing the Comey letter-no Trump searching Bolton’s home on entirely pretextual politically motivated grounds is still “merely very bad not cataclysmic?” The other reason Schoenberg gives is also entirely correct-Comey still defends this egregious and deeply harmful action coming on nine years later-today is 8/23/2025 so we’re what? Two months and five days away from the nine year anniversary.
But Schoenberg puts it so aptly:
“Obviously, Comey is simply incapable of imagining the world as it would have been had he made a different choice. What could he possibly mean by “might have been even worse”? Worse than what actually transpired? Worse than his firing by President Trump? What exactly is he imagining that would be worse? Really, what is it?”
Comey, Comey, and more Comey! | Schoenblog.com
Exactly the right question-what is it? Worse than his own daughter who he based his main character-Nora Carleton-on being fired from SDNY? Let’s be clear: Comey doesn’t write that latter his daughter doesn’t get fired as Trump would likely never become President and therefore wouldn’t have been there to fire her because her last name is Comey.
Worse than the fact that Trump is not only going after John Bolton but quite possibly now Comey hiself on yet another politically motivated boondoggle. Adding insult to injury as only Trump can he’s trying to charge Bolton with-stealing classified documents. With Comey he’s looking at prosecuting him for the admittedly fairly damning new information that Comey DID leak to the NY Times.
FN:
Comey Testified In 2017 That He Never Leaked Classified Info To Media | Watch
But of course, as usual Trump is looking at the telescope upside down-Comey did leak to the Times for the Dean Baquet’s infamous error filled “FBI Sees No Clear Links to Russia” boondoggle but it hardly means what Trump claims it means-that Comey had James Baker leak to hurt his campaign. In fact the story HELPED Trump by falsely claiming there was no there there in the Russia investigation. So Comey’s leak at the convenience of helping Trump.

CODA: Once again Comey appears to be congenitally incapable of doing anything that isn’t convenient to the Republican Party which makes it all the more ironic that Trump and his co-conspirators have made Comey into Public Enemy #1-just offers proof of concept to the old saying “No honor among thieves”-no even less gratitude to the man who did so much to elect their guy.
This is further buttressed by. the fact that while Trump’s DOJ released the fact that Comey. had spoken to the Times they. held back WHAT he has said to the Times which tells you what he did in fact say wasn’t helpful to the narrative that Comey. had Baker leak to hurt Trump.
Section: Ok back to another nice thing about James Comey.
To be clear I never promised I was done saying things about him that aren’t nice. However, he’s recently self identified as a Taylor Swift fan-which is kind of cool and more than a little rich in irony.
James Comey is sure to get under Donald Trump’s skin once again — this time for extolling the virtues of Taylor Swift.
The former FBI director, who was fired during the polarizing president’s first term, has revealed himself to be a superfan of the pop superstar his political foe “hates” the most.
A new video posted to the Substack platform on Sunday shows Comey referring to Swift as “a truly inspirational public figure” and noting her recent stream-crashing appearance on Jason and Travis Kelce’s podcast “New Heights.”
James Comey praises Taylor Swift, unloads on Donald Trump in vlog
Presumably his daughters got him into Swift?:
“Taylor Swift and I go way back,” the 64-year-old grandfather shared in the clip. “I went to my first concert of hers 15 years ago. I’ve been to a second, and I have helped financially support the attendance of a lot of family members and others.”
He continued: “I’m in a family Swiftie group chat. I know all her music, and I listen to it in my headphones when I cut the grass.”
Comey also shared that the 10-minute version of Swift’s “All Too Well” is among his favorites, which also include “Exile” featuring Bon Iver. He said the 14-time Grammy Award winner has produced “great art” that has been the soundtrack of his family’s life.
He then went on to talk about standing up to bullies and mentioned Gavin Newsom’s back and forth with the 79-year-old MAGA leader.”
I agree-standing up to bullies is not just admirable but as the Trump Era has shown all too well it’s essential. If only6 Comey had done the same in 2016 rather than paying the ransom. Again and again. Like he did when he had that very careless presser in July 2016 based on a fake Russian document or so he testified at one point to Congress. Like to the rogue agents that backed him into the letter in the first place.
No question the world would be a much better place had Comey himself stood up to bullies rather than appeasing them at every turn. And again even after everything he chose appeasement yet again when he apologized over Carter Page though it wasn’t clear in this case what exactly he himself had done wrong-or anyone had. As we saw in Chapter X Emptywheel had documented that there was nothing unusual in Page’s FISA warrant compared with most other cases. But repeatedly, Comey paid the ransom.
And where has it got him?
Comey recounted attending multiple Swift concerts over the years, joining a family “Swiftie group chat,” and listening to her music while mowing the lawn. He named “All Too Well (10-Minute Version)” and “Exile” among his favorite songs.
This is not parody. This is former FBI director James Comey. After using his power for years to entrap Trump, Flynn and others, he tries now to come across as a normal guy, a Taylor Swift fan, and a champion of civility and decorum. I’d love to see this sociopath locked up. pic.twitter.com/DD6Jqxq2jh

Former FBI Director James Comey fangirls over Taylor Swift in bizarre video
That’s what he gets. That’s the appreciation from the GOP Far Right-which Comey himself had been a member of for all those years he was leading the FBI. They want to lock him up over completely contrived charges-after all he did for them. Seriously the lack of gratitude is stunning. But no honor among thieves even less any gratitude. After he locked up Martha Stewart over completely contrived-not to say nonexistent charges. After he 5did everything he could to foment the Lock Her UP narrative in 2016 where while he didn’t literally Lock Her UP he did defeat her campaign by dragging it out for 15 months and breaking the rules and protocols of the DOJ every which way to Sunday and back again.
CODA: To be clear Comey DID do the crime. It’s recently been revealed when he told Congress he never leaked to anyone that was a lie as we discussed above. But the idea that Comey did this to entrap Trump doesn’t pass the laugh test. Whatever his motivations for having Baker speak to the Times it actually helped Trump by falsely claiming there was nothing to the Russia investigation. Exactly what Comey did tell the Times is another fascinating question which we will revisit in the Epilogue. And of course for Trump to attempt to prosecute him over this is just another politically motivated boondoggle. But-well who’s fault is this?
Section: Karma’s a Woman and Justice is a Bitch?
I guess in some deeper moral, Karmic sense it’s kind of apropos for Comey to be threatened with prosecution over politically contrived charges seeing as he imprisoned Martha Stewart over: politically contrived charges and leaving Hillary Clinton twisting in the wind the entire election over: politically contrived charges.
Live by the politically contrived charges die by the politically contrived charges.
Section: But Again Whose Fault is This?
When Comey says:
Former FBI Director James Comey raised eyebrows over the weekend after he posted a lengthy video on his Substack, in which he mixed political commentary with his admiration for pop superstar Taylor Swift.
Wearing a suit and tie, Comey began his remarks about his recent bout with COVID-19 before turning to politics: “Donald Trump is still president and still humiliating America on a national stage … It’s like a dream, a bad dream you can’t wake up from.”
FN: Former FBI Director James Comey fangirls over Taylor Swift in bizarre video
No doubt that’s how so many of us feel, tens of millions of us feel-that the Trump years are this bad dream-indeed nightmare-we can’t wake up from. But it lands a little different coming from the guy who elected him in the first place. You do have to ask: whose fault is it? Seeing as Comey has continued to insist over the last almost nine years that he made the right choice that if he had it all to do over again he’d do the same thing.
Like in the Bulwark interview he did it again-oops I did it again! He played the same old false equivalence “both sides do it” card that got us to where we are today-a nightmare we can’t wake up from-in the first place.
I mean, when someone yells you at me on the street, I have to pause and say, “Is that a Clintonian you or a Trumpian?” And I look for context clues and location and inflection. And it’s because people are trapped in their own bubbles.
FN: Comey Reveals All: Trump’s FBI Madness and The “86” Fiasco (w/ James Comey) | Bulwark Podcast at 0:00
Get it? We’re all just “trapped in our own bubbles”-both the Trumpian and the Clintonian people. It’s not like the Clintonian people have any good reason to hate him right? What’s notable is he goes onto talk at length about the baseless motivations of the Trumpian folks and his analysis there is correct. But he never even hazards a guess as to why the “Clintonian people” might hate him. That maybe it’s because he stole the election from Clinton over entirely contrived and baseless politically motivated charges and that he still can’t admit just how bad he messed up.
Probably because we have only the faintest clue about just how egregious his conduct in Emailgate really was. That recent revelation that he actually did like to the Times may well be just the tip of the iceberg of how egregious it was. For starters-do you honestly believe that was the only time he leaked during Emailgate?
And on some level it’s clear that while Comey feels he can’t risk admitting just how wrong he was-as that would open the door to delving far deeper into the level of misconduct he engaged in during Emailgate hehe knows the Clintonian folks have every good reason in the world to hate him. The Bill E. Buckner of American politics. He’s done everything he can think of-other than admitting the truth: that what he did regarding the Comey Letter was unforgivable and we continue to suffer the ill effects of that criminally stupid and appalling decision to this day. We-including him and his daughter.
Think about it. In 2018 he made sure the world knew he endorsed Democratic candidate Jennifer Wexton:
James Comey knocks on doors for Virginia Democrat Jennifer Wexton
This was the first time in his adult life he’d supported a Democrat for office6-he’d been a lifelong Republican until the 2016 election where he ended up not voting for either Trump or Clinton he says. So even after all that he still considered Clinton just as big a threat as Trump.
He publicly wore his “elect more women” t shirt and when Hillary quite rightly clapped back at him on Twitter he admitted it was pretty funny-though of course he as always ducked the substance of her criticism.
CODA: He declared he only regretted being involved in the 2016. Well he didn’t have to be in fact he should not have been as that’s what the DOJ regs say.
Comey on Clinton tweet: ‘I regret only being involved in the 2016 election’
Every chance he gets he extolls the women in his life-his wife, his daughters, bases his fictional crime book series on his oldest daughter. He has endless peons to the greatness of the women in his life:
“…obviously I my household is dominated by intelligent, strong, tall, women and so they that helps me
FN: Comey Reveals All: Trump’s FBI Madness and The “86” Fiasco (w/ James Comey) | Bulwark Podcast 46:35
speaking of the help they gave him in constructing his female book characters.
Section: The Comey Conundrum
What couldn’t be more abundantly clear is Comey desires absolution, he desires forgiveness and redemption. But as a Catholic you’d think he knows you don’t get redemption without repentance. We’re once again up against the Comey Conundrum-he’ll extoll the wisdom and superior intelligence of his wife to the Heavens but he simply dismissed her admonition that he not do The Letter.
FN: James Comey Married: Inside His Family Life With Wife, Kids
Just like in the last almost nine years he’s done everything he can right up to becoming a Swiftie quoting her lyrics to ingratiate himself to Blue State America particularly women but he still won’t admit it’s the choice he did make that was, is, remains cataclysmic ,
And this dynamic couldn’t be more clear in this book. The version of the FBI you see in the book is strikingly WOKE and dominated by women-Nora Carelton based on his daughter. Also Black women, even a transwoman. But is that really the version of the FBI that Comey was part of all those years? The FBI of Louis Freeh, James Kallstrom. of the rogue agents leaking to defeat Clinton who threatened to give Huma Abedin’s emails to Wikileaks-which worked as Comey caved and did The Letter. The FBI which remains as it always was dominated by White, male, Catholic, Republicans?
There’s one part of his-again very enjoyable book-that struck me as kind of a hint into Comey’s moral vanity. Nora Carelton got into this rather weird-in my view-digressionary conundrum-Comey is all about weird digressionary moral “conundrums” that point to his more elevated Kantian moral sense. Here Nora decides she doesn’t want to use a major witness because he admittedly was a pretty bad guy.
This is a kind of psychodrama that the book belabors for a few chapters. I sort of read this as Comey trying to link this pointless conundrum-after all in reality if you refuse to ever use a witness who’s not a choir boy it’s a boon to criminals the world over-as a kind of stealth justification of But Her Emails. This was Trump’s argument-you can’t use Michael Cohen as he himself was a bad guy.
CODA: To be sure I continue to wonder what Michael Cohen is really on about now more than ever after Tara Palmeri’s very deft exposure of him in their recent interview. Cohen is not a guy I believe has told the full truth on what he knows about Trump’s relationship with Epstein OR Trump’s real relationship with Russia or for that matter anything. Nevertheless his testimony against Trump was the truth so far as it went just that he’s been anything but honest on many other subjects.
In any case without using criminals to take down other, bigger, criminals you would never have taken down John Gotti. Comey’s heavy weather over this in the book strikes me as him trying to offer a down low apologia for his unforgivable Letter. The idea seems to be that there’s virtue in be willing to do things that hurt your own case to show off how morally austere you are.. Now if following the law or protocols hurts your case then that says something about your case. But that’s not what he did in Emailgate-rather he violated the rules and protocol for his own Kantian ad hoc pretensions.
I half agree with this YouTube commentator who left this comment after Comey’s Bulwark interview.
The part I don’t agree with is I don’t feel any empathy for Comey. I mean none. I mean where’s his empathy for Ryan Hamilton-who’s wife’s was threatened under Texas abortion law. That’s where my empathy lies. With all the victims of our Trumpian nightmare that Comey cosigned. He did this.
Comey adores and worships his wife. Great. Ryan Hamilton feels the same but he had to watch his wife forced to continue to bear a deaf fetus in her womb, endangering her life because of Texas’s draconian anti abortion law made possible because Comey elected Trump. Does he want to tell Hamilton what happened to his wife was “merely very bad” but not “cataclysmic?” No “cataclysmic was according to Comey a scenario where Clinton won the election and then Trey Gowdy called him before Congress and raked him over the coals. Again tell that to Ryan Hamiltion-I’m sure he’d understand.

Texas’ Abortion Ban Nearly Killed His Wife. Now He’s Speaking Out. – Ms. Magazine
And while he had to watch this happen to his wife and have the horrifying fear the state of Texas it’s odious and despicable law was going to kill his wife and he wouldn’t be able to protect her, this woman-a 37 year old .is also someone’s daughter. As much as Comey loves his daughter millions of women like her in their child bearing years faces this threat. They could be raped and forced to bear their rapists’ baby. Or they could have a life threatening pregnancy. They could have both-their rapist impregnates them and the pregnancy is life threatening.
Or like in this case they could miscarry and not be allowed even then to have a procedure. OR they could be prosecuted after being falsely accused of causing the miscarriage. It could even be from a pregnancy she had wanted.
So no it’s the millions of women and their loved ones who I empathize not with Comey. Because he did this, he built that.
And this is only one example of the tens of millions suffering under this Comey inspired Trumpian nightmare. There’s the woman in a coma being forced to be kept alive to complete her pregnancy-she’s two months in.
This case being in Georgia-it’s not just Texas, not just Texas AND Georgia but in like 30% of the country, While Trump grandly declares that he personally supports exceptions in cases of rape, incest, or the life of the mother, in reality all the red states that have banned abortion post Dobbs have no such exceptions. The idea that abortoin is banned except for a couple of extreme exceptions isn’t a sustainable regime and in reality you see this regime nowhere-the red states have all done a full ban. Let’s not even get into the millions of people who voted for abortion rights AND Trump…
There are many others suffering under Trump. It’s not just about abortion. There are the many harmed world wide after Trump illegally destroy USAID overnight breaking our promises to the world. Take the case of Mohammad Halimi-after the US via Trump’s DOHA agreement with the Talian cut and ran, we at least under Biden agreed to let people like Mr. Halimi find a life here-seeing as we had invaded their country, occupied them for 20 years and promised that we would support their democratic government. But then Trump-the guy Comey elected-got back in after the GOP Supreme Court gave him absolute immunity.
“Afghan scholar Mohammad Halimi, who fled the Taliban in 2021, had worked to help U.S. diplomats understand his homeland. Then DOGE put his family’s lives at risk by exposing his sensitive work for a U.S.-funded nonprofit.”
How DOGE Left Mohammad Halimi’s Life in Tatters — ProPublica
They’re all those being harmed by RFK Jr’s anti vax regime. There are the ill effects of Trump’s tariff war against the entire world. There are all those who have been wrongly detained by Trump’s Gestapo agents at ICE. Trump has asserted the right to snatch anyone off the street for any reason or no reason.
There are all of those who will be hurt by the deep cuts to Medicaid and Medicare in Trump’s Big Ugly Bill. \
And there are all of Trump’s real or perceived political enemies-like John Bolton and James Comey who he now asserts the right to prosecute whatever evidence or lack thereof he very well may have.
All seems kind of “very careless” and “cataclysmic” to paraphrase a few of Comey’s recurring neologisms.
