Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) have identified five core competencies for teaching SEL and SECD. CASEL has researched high-quality SEL programs since 1994, and are highly regarded for their valuable research. The five core competencies are displayed below and include the following: Self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making.

Comparing the five core competencies with 21st century learning skills, it is clear that SEL has its place in current curriculum. Life and career skills, critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity are amongst the traits necessary for successful 21st century learning.
Common Core State Standards (CCSS) were adopted by California in 2010, yet implementation did not occur until recently. With major shifts in core content area teaching and learning occurring like text evidence, complex academic language and vocabulary, and higher-order thinking skills, the CCSS also recognized the need to address both content and skills (Common Core State Standards Initiative, 2016). With global 21st century skills being at the heart of CCSS, social skills, emotional control, and character traits are all skills that may benefit students’ ability to succeed in mastering the CCSS, as well as help prepare them for life outside of K-12 education.
