The curriculum included has been designed for use in face-to-face, blended and online settings. Providing options for students to access materials allows you to focus more on the content of the course without having to reformat materials for various preferences. Whenever possible, reading selections have been provided in multiple formats to meet those demands. PDF for printing; EPUB for eReaders; or online text for simple viewing on a computer. If possible, the MP3 have also been provided for student listening. The digital version of this course for use within a Learning Management System (like Moodle) can be found at courses.oermn.org.
You are free to decide how you’d like to provide access to your students. Perhaps some content works better for you or your students on a printed page, maybe some should be left only to class discussion, while other content makes sense for students to work with on their own. While some suggestions will be made about how materials might be used, the decision is yours; we’ve tried to leave specific directions out of the assignments/content so that you can decide what gets used and how.
Once you receive a copy of this course it becomes your course. Supplementing it with your own materials is as easy as uploading them into your Learning Management System (LMS) in-line with the existing content. We know that changes will be made and we encourage teachers to provide course feedback and suggestions through the form provided in the course. The idea is that this course is never truly finished but can evolve based on use and new resources that become available.
English Language Arts 12 is organized into two categories: the 12-unit course and Common Core supplemental material. If lessons on a particular benchmark are necessary at any point with students who are struggling with Reading, Writing or Research Strategies then these can be made available to them as needed.
In the same way that you may open a textbook for a course and find ways to modify and adapt materials for your students, we hope that you will do the same thing with ELA 12. Use as is or a supplement; mix-and-match; plug in units where they might apply to what you’re already doing. You could for instance teach this course using only the eight units. Or you may use the Common Core material to supplement your existing classroom content. Of course, you could “mix and match” the categories and even incorporate your own content, as described earlier.
