Chapter 2: Storms on the Canvas

Intro:

The submission was sent, but Jamie’s battle had only just begun. With the competition deadline behind him, he now faced a storm not only outside but within—the doubt, the silence, and the long wait for answers.

Story:

Weeks passed. Spring rains turned the dirt roads into rivers, and Jamie grew restless. Every day, he checked the mailbox, heart thudding, only to find empty air. His father kept his distance, clearly disappointed that his son had chosen pencils over practicality.

At school, Miss Harper encouraged him to keep drawing, but even she began to talk about the upcoming term ending. Jamie feared the magic was fading. His sketchbook stayed closed for days. He didn’t want to draw anymore—not if the world was just going to ignore it.

Then, one morning, the letter came.

A cream-colored envelope with the Edinburgh Youth Arts seal. Jamie stared at it for a long time before daring to open it. His mother, drying dishes at the sink, watched quietly. When he finally unfolded the letter, his breath caught.

He had been selected as one of ten finalists. His piece—“Wings Over Elsridge”—would be featured in an exhibition at the National Youth Gallery in Edinburgh. The note added: You are invited to attend the finalist showcase and awards ceremony next month.

He couldn’t believe it. Jamie, the boy who never raised his hand in class, was going to Edinburgh—his drawing hung beside others from across Scotland.

But not everyone was thrilled.

His father scoffed. “So, they hang it on a wall. What good does that do? Can’t buy dinner with a painting.”

Jamie’s heart stung, but he pressed on. Miss Harper organized transport for him and his mum. She even helped him prepare a short explanation of his piece, in case he was asked to speak.

The night before they left, Jamie sat on the rocky beach, sketching the moonlight on the water. He wasn’t sure if he would win. Maybe the other kids’ work would be better. But somehow, it didn’t matter anymore. He had come further than he ever dreamed.

Outro:

As he tucked his sketchbook under his arm and turned back toward the house, Jamie whispered to the sea breeze, “No matter what happens—I’ll keep painting.
