In teachers we trust?

After speaking with over 100 students of Spanish and their teachers, they told us that it was important to have role models who didn’t necessarily represent only the mainstream characteristics of a speaker of Spanish. To help us explore what these role models might be like, we have collected several TikTok videos as inspiration. The bonus is that these videos also feature teachers of Spanish in many cases, who are often a role model for students of Spanish.

  • Think back to your original idea about the “ideal” speaker. Why do you think you provided that description? Where did your ideas come from?
  • How do you think your ideas about the “ideal” speak influence your behaviour/actions?
  • Comment on what you have learned about speaking Spanish from the activities in this project. Has anything changed about how you think or feel about speaking Spanish?
  • Do you think it is helpful to have an “ideal” Spanish speaker in mind? If not, how else might we think about speakers of Spanish instead?
