Gaming for Good: The Disconnection Challenge
Now have students access the student chapter The Disconnection Challenge. Have students watch the video and answer the multiple-choice questions, or show the video in fullscreen at this link.
After students have watched the video (and answered the questions if applicable), have them complete the interactive activity to analyse the Disconnection Challenge as a game.
Explain that the Disconnection Challenge is a simple example of a “game for good” that uses some of the elements of games (like a goal, quantification and competition) to make people do something positive.
Make sure students understand that the goal of the Disconnection Challenge was not to get people to use media less, but the be more mindful of their media use and identity specific activities (like Snapchat streaks) that they weren’t enjoying.
