Introduction
Activate prior knowledge by asking students if they have ever watched the credits at the beginning or end of a movie, TV show or video game. (Make sure you understand that you’re talking about actually reading the credits, not just sitting through them so you can watch a post-credits scene.) Ask what some of the different jobs listed are or some names they remember seeing. (Students will probably name actors or possibly directors. A few may possibly name other roles such as animators, composers, stunt performers or special effects artists.) So who are all those people listed in the credits?
Have students read The Construction Crew (https://pressbooks.pub/mediasmarts/chapter/the-construction-crew/) in the student section of the textbook and ask if they can explain what the people listed on it do when making a movie or TV show. You may choose to do this as a whole-class activity or have students write down their guesses individually.
Explain that production is divided into three phrases:
However, some jobs (like the Director) span all three of these.
When students have identified which jobs they think they are familiar with and which they aren’t, go through the answers with them in the next chapter.
