Real Privacy Dangers Follow-Up Activity

Consider the scenarios students played through in the Other People’s Photos chapter of A Day in the Life of the Jos. Ask students to consider:

  • What are some of the things Jo and Josie could have done differently to avoid their privacy problems?

Organize students into small groups of 4 to 6 students and, within each group, split students into two subgroups:

  1. Half of the group should focus on how Jo and Josie’s actions impacted their own privacy
  2. The other half of the group should focus on how Jo and Josie’s actions impacted others’ privacy

Have students record their discussion in the activities in the Real Privacy Dangers chapter of the student material. Please note that there are two activities – one for each subgroup – and students are therefore required to only complete one.

Once students have recorded their answers, have them rejoin with the other half of their group to share their findings with one another, using the activity to summarize their results.

Once groups have reconvened, ask each group to share their findings with the class. Finally, divide each group into two again – have one half of each group make a “Dos” and “Don’ts” list for protecting your own privacy (found here in the student material) and the other half make one for respecting others’ privacy (found here in the student material). Teachers are welcome to set the rule on how many examples students should write for each category.
