The Emoji Game

Have students access the student chapter The Emoji Game.

Explain to students that they are going to make a game that is built around using emojis as a main game mechanic.

Tell them that game must:

  • Use emojis as an important game mechanic
  • The emojis must do the same thing in the game as they do in online communication (communicate or clarify what someone means or how they are feeling)

The game can:

  • Be any kind of game (a board game, an improv game, a card game, a video game, etc.)
  • Modify an existing game if they want, but it does not have to
    • If students are stuck, tell them to think about games that have communicating true or false information as a core dynamic: charades, rock-paper-scissors, poker, Battleship, etc.

The game must not:

  • Use the exact same design as an existing game
  • Be only quiz questions
  • Encourage rudeness or bullying

Students should also write a short explanation of their game rules, what role the emojis play and how that is connected to their role in online communication.

Depending on time and resources available, you may choose to have them make a prototype of the game and assess it with the Game Prototype Assessment Rubric, or just submit their game design and assess it with the Game Concept Assessment Rubric.
