Twentieth Century: Part 1
In the 20th Century the types of art being practiced exploded — never had there been more “ism” to enjoy, and perhaps be perplexed by. The rapidity of change, the audacity of the artists’ visions, and the drive to be more and more creative and original generated a dizzying artistic atmosphere. Much of 20th Century art is often thought of as supercilious and self involved, and it can be esoteric. It takes a viewer who has an intent and desire to expand their visual experience to find meaning and enjoyment in it.

More Learning Resources
Remember, since we can’t cover everything about art in this class, these reading assignments are based on the choices I have made for what to include, but there is much more that has not been included. If you are interested in learning more, please remember that our primary source, the Khan Academy, has lots of other videos and articles that explore this time and culture even further. You can explore them at Khan Academy (Beginners guide to 20th Century Art) or SmartHistory (Modernisms).
