This section contains audiovisual recordings that convey the nature and condition of example traditions

In April to May 2021 and January to February 2022, the project team (including Carter-Enyi and Blench) made recordings in Kaduna and Plateau States. The examples offered here primarily come from the recordings. The urgency and need for the proposed project are underscored by the advanced age of many of the skilled practitioners depicted in these examples and the lack of documentation for hundreds of cultures.

Currently, only Idoma and Mwaghavul videos have captions and English translations (speech in English and Hausa is also captioned). The proposed project will greatly expand the representation of indigenous languages in digital formats with linked data including videos with captions and songs in music notation with lyrics.

Examples of Individual Traditions

The following are examples of individual traditions gathered during preliminary fieldwork in preparation for the project proposal. Each clip is one of several gathered for each tradition.

Examples of Collections and Montages

Clips may be organized by ethnolinguistic culture (e.g., Boze or Mwaghavul) or by cross-cultural (cluster) traditions. They may also be edited into montages on a specific topic (e.g., farmer-herder conflict).
