When his daughters were very young (Martha was about 10 yeas old), Heinrich became very ill which left him paralyzed. After that he was wheelchair bound much of the time. His wife, Margaretha, and his daughters did the farm work.

Heinrich Cordes died on March 28, 1899, near Farrar, Missouri, USA, at the age of 49, and was buried in the Salem Lutheran Church Cemetery.
