Is there a difference between quantify vs quantitate?

Depends on who you ask. Colloquially, and in empirical science, we usually use the terms interchangeably.

Can we please get more help with the math? How can I improve my efficiency in lab calculations? I know this is very important and I want to master it.

Can we do math at the beginning and middle of class? I am brain dead after an hour of lecture… I hear the call – we’ll do a lab math review either during lab or at the next lecture. In the mean time, the NIH has two you tube videos that cover allllll of lab math. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mN38q2OBJgI and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9totzBMvHUg&t=891s

The most confusing part of this course for me is keeping track of the different aspects that use math skills – for example, calculating volumes, bp/vector ratios.

It seems intuitive, but the first thing to do when solving a lab math problem of any sort is to identify the type of problem. In the real world of lab work, the problems are not nicely framed in a test format. We have tried to throw problems at you in the different forms that they might appear in the lab. Identifying the type of problem and the principles that need to be applied to solve it is a skill and it’s going to take practice. One way to develop that skill is to explain out loud (to yourself or a study buddy) what the problem is, what principles are involved, and the approach you plan to take to solve it. As you are getting started learning to do this, go through the worked out example problems and describe “why” and “how” for each problem solving step. If you’d like help getting started with this learning technique, please come see me and/or visit this site for more info on the science of learning to learn https://sites.google.com/site/unlvhowtolearn/self-explanation
