Welcome to the Applications of Educational Technology eBook.

The purpose of this online resource is to serve as an interactive open textbook for EDIT 3310 Instructional Technology at Odessa College. This resource has been adapted from Susan L. Stansberry’s Applications of Educational Technology at Oklahoma State University. We invite you to ask questions, contribute resources, and participate in making this a living, collaborative resource for all educators!

Course information: This course is an introduction to the design and development of instruction using educational media and technology. It involves development of teaching and learning materials using digital technologies, contemporary applications of computers and other electronic systems to instruction. Because this is a preservice education course, the main focus is on effective integration of educational technology and instructional design.

This is EDIT 3310 Instructional Technology, an eight week course that is taught online through Blackboard Ultra at Odessa College. The focus of this course is not only to model excellence in teaching with technology but also to provide a safe environment within which preservice teachers can work independently or in teams to facilitate active and engaged peer learning that reflects best practices in technology integration, instructional design, content presentation, instructional strategies, standards-based assessment, and lesson reflection. You will experience true student-centered learning in this class with your instructor modelling the role of facilitator.

Course Description and Outcomes from Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (2024/2025)

EDIT 3310 (Instructional Technology, Odessa College) engages the undergraduate student in the use of technology as an educational tool. Students will have the opportunity to explore and utilize technology applications that enhance the teaching/learning process.

Student learning Outcomes – SLOs

Upon completion of this course, students will:

  1. Use technology to facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity;
  2.  Design and develop digital-age learning experiences and assessments;
  3.  Model digital-age work and learning;
  4. Promote and model digital citizenship and responsibility;
  5. Recognize the importance of continued professional growth and leadership in achieving and maintaining expertise in the use of educational technology;
  6.  Demonstrate knowledge of instructional resources, tools and materials, including technology, for teaching science and procedures for ensuring the proper use of safety equipment and safe practices during classroom activities;
  7. Demonstrate knowledge of types of digital tools and resources and strategies for using them to enhance teaching effectiveness, create learning experiences that facilitate creativity, and promote student achievement across the content areas;
  8. Demonstrate knowledge of developmentally appropriate digital tools and resources and strategies to help children explore real-world issues, solve authentic problems, develop global awareness, participate in local and global learning communities, and develop the ability to pursue and manage their own learning, while understanding safety and privacy risks

Additional Objectives for EDIT 3310 (Instructional Technology at Odessa College)

Students will develop an online portfolio of resources demonstrating the following additional objectives:

  1. Students will use technology-related terms, concepts, data input strategies, and ethical practices to make informed decisions about current technologies and their applications.
  2. Students will identify task requirements, apply search strategies, and use current technology to efficiently acquire, analyze, and evaluate a variety of electronic information.
  3. Students will use task-appropriate tools to synthesize knowledge, create and modify solutions, and evaluate results in a way that supports the work of individuals and groups in problem-solving situations.
  4. Students will communicate information in different formats and for diverse audiences.
  5.  Students will know how to plan, organize, deliver, and evaluate instruction for all students that incorporates the effective use of current technology for teaching and integrating the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) into the curriculum

*PSLO 1 Competency – Upon completion of the program, students will use their understanding of child development – including young children’s unique characteristics and needs, and the multiple interacting influences on children’s development and learning – to create environments that are healthy, respectful, supportive, and challenging for each child. (SLO 1, 2, 6, 8)

*PSLO 2 Effective Approaches – Upon completion of the program, students implement a wide array of developmentally appropriate approaches, instructional strategies, and tools to connect with children and families and positively influence each child’s development and learning, which will vary depending on children’s ages, characteristics, and the early childhood setting. (SLO 1, 2, 6, 8)

*PSLO 3 – Application – Upon completion of the program, students will apply their knowledge of developmental domains and academic (or content) disciplines to design, implement, and evaluate meaningful, challenging curriculum that promotes comprehensive developmental and learning outcomes for each child. (SLO 1, 2, 6, 7, 8)

PSLO 4 – Professionalism – Upon completion of this program, students are collaborative learners who will continuously demonstrate knowledgeable, reflective and critical perspectives of their work, make informed decisions that integrate knowledge from a variety of sources, including ethical guidelines, and advocate for sound educational practices and policies. (SLO 1, 2, 3, 4)

PSLO 5 – Field Experience – Upon completion of this program, students will engage in field experiences and clinical practice to develop the knowledge, skills and professional dispositions necessary to promote the development and learning of young children in a variety of early childhood settings and with multiple age groups. (SLO 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8)
