John Witt dies;  funeral services on Saturday
John Witt, 85, a lifetime Nebraskan, died about 6:15 a.m. today’ at his home, 2110 17th street. In failing health for several years, he was seriously ill the last three months.
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Federated church with the Rev. Harold B. Taylor, pastor, officiating and burial will be in Roselawn Memorial cemetery.
The body will lie in state at the Gass Funeral chapel from 11 a.m Friday until the hour of the service.
Mr. Witt, son of the late John H. and Sophie Mavis Witt, was born Dec. 24, 1873 at Scribner, one of a family of 11 children. After attending rural schools and Fedmont Normal, he took up the milling trade, an occupation he followed for 50 years, operating mills at Scribner, Leigh and Potter. Later he pursued his hobby of cabinet making until retiring about three years ago.
He married Friedricka Brunken on Oct. 20, 1898 at her home northwest of Columbus and’ they observed their 60th wedding anniversary last fall. Mr. and Mrs. Witt have resided in Columbus for 17 years. He was a member of the Federated church, was affiliated. with the Oddfellows lodge for 46 years and had a life membership in the Macabees lodge.
Survivors include his wife; six children, Mrs, M. D. (Clara) Miur of Fremont, George of Los Angeles, Mrs. Jacob (Anna) Glur at Columbus. Harry of Los Angeles, Leroy of Bonners Ferry, Ida., Clifford of Planada, Calif; 25 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren; one sister,Mrs/ Pete Diedrickson of Scribner;  four brothers, Dr. Bernard Witt and Reinhold Witt of Scribner, Ewald Witt of Washington,’ D.C. and Arnold Witt of West Point.
He was preceded’ in death by a son, Melvin, three sisters and two brothers.
