DAS
Erika Brockmann, Fall 2017
Many students have a disability that can affect their learning environment. Disability Access Services (DAS) gives support to students who have a life affecting disability and offers services to help give these students an equitable education. Not only can students receive access in person at OSU but online as well. In fact, OSU has a DAS webpage dedicated to campus students specifically which can be found here: http://ds.oregonstate.edu/ecampus.
Before getting started with disability services, an appointment can be made in person or over the phone. Guidelines on how to start this process are listed here: http://ds.oregonstate.edu/gettingstarted. Once started, students can go through an in-person or online orientation on how to complete the accommodations process to include submitting documentation.
There are a number off different services available to online students which are listed below along with the contact information for each:
- Proctored testing
- Some students need a quiet place to test or extra time to adequately complete an exam.
- A testing center is located at OSU for students with disabilities.
- For those not close to the Corvallis location, students can work with Ecampus Testing to find a suitable location.
- For some students needing the availability to test in their own home, there are also certain online proctoring services as well. This is especially used for students who may need certain assistive technology that a testing center may not have available.
- For more information, call 541.737.4098 or email testing.services@oregonstate.edu.
- Alternative formats
- Some students have difficulty using a paper version of a textbook due to a disability. Through Alternative Formats, students can obtain an E-text copy or braille version of their book and can also use a program called ReadOutLoud.
- After a student purchases a book, they can show the receipt to DAS and an alternative format that fits the needs of the student will be sent to them.
- Sometimes an E-text copy of the book cannot be located and students can send in their text book to be scanned and made electronic that way.
- Assignments and tests can also be made into an accessible format.
- For more information, email alt.format@oregonstate.edu
- Captioned media
- Some students have an auditory impairment. This makes videos with auditory difficult. By contacting the DAS Program Manager of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Access services, these students can get access to captioned videos, DVDs, and internet clips.
- For more information, call 541.737.4098 or email dhoh.services@oregonstate.edu.
Students are not the only ones who can get help from DAS. Faculty can also access training on how to make their classes more accessible. More information on training can be found here: https://pace.oregonstate.edu/catalog/disability-access-services-faculty-training.
