Goodwin/Shattuck, Oklahoma

William Kirmse’s brothers, Joseph and Louis Kirmse, purchased a quarter section of land 4 miles east of the William and Martha’s homestead. They never lived there- instead they rented out the land.

Helen (Kirmse) Hacker says that her father, Louis Kirmse, did not accompany his brother, Joseph Kirmse, on the trip to Oklahoma to purchase land. Louis Kirmse had to stay home on the farm in Missouri to take care of the chores while Joseph came to Oklahoma and purchased the quarter of land that they divided into two 80 acre properties.

A note on the back of the photograph reads “Grandma Anna Kahnert”. Also, a note that Ella (Kirmse) Krueger provided Donna (Kirmse) Martin on a separate August Kahnert family photo reads:  “August Kahnert was a friend of Dad who lived at Shattuck, OK. He helped my folks move to Alva. His mother, Anna Kahnert, was my sponsor. Art Kahnert stayed around Alva for a long time.”  I remember that Ella said that Grandma Anna Kahnert was the source of her first middle name, Anna.

On the right side of the picture are two teams of horses/mules:
