Goodwin, Oklahoma – 2015
29
The following Google Earth map shows the relative locations of Goodwin and the Lutheran Church and Cemetery to the Kirmse and Lohmann properties. William Kirmse mentions in his autobiography[1] that he and Martha Kirmse joined the Lutheran Church that was located two miles from the Kirmse farm. When John Krueger[2] visited the Goodwin area in April of 2015, he took roadside photographs at the locations marked as 14 and 15[2].
Lutheran Cemetery
The Lutheran Cemetery is active as may be seen by the following photographs.
“In 1910 the land around the cemetery belonged to the Houser estate. On cemetery gate: “Dedicated to John and Katharina Appel” The oldest recorded death by headstone is that of Rachel Meier in 1904. However, there are several graves that are not marked which are probably older. “[3]
Lutheran Church
“In 1906 Mr. Michael Borth helped build the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on the David Sell Homestead. This church was dedicated March 11, 1906. The church location was across the road west of the cemetery. This church was built in the style of the German Russian traditions.”[3][4]
The Lutheran Church building near Goodwin no longer exists as can be seen in the following photograph.
