THE MASSACRE AT PERUGIA – THE OUTRAGE TO MR PERKINS AND HIS PARTY.
Florence, Saturday June 25, 1859
An American family … Mr and Mrs Edward Perkins, of Boston with his mother Mrs Doane … and sister and niece … narrowly escaped the dreadful carnage at Perugia on 20th – of which you have doubtless heard through the telegraph to London – but were subjected to serious alarm and suffering.
Una famiglia americana… il sig. e la signora Perkins, di Boston con la madre la sig.ra Doane e la figlia e la nipote, a malapena sono scampati al terribile massacro a Perugia il 20 di questo mese – della cui notizia avrete senza dubbio sentito dal telegrafo a Londra- e hanno subito una notevole preoccupazione e danno.
Having passed the winter at Rome, they had taken summer apartments at one of the hotels in the historic old mountain city, when the people, after the example of Bologna and other towns in the Roman States, threw off their allegiance and pronounced for Sardinia and the War.
Dopo aver trascorso l’inverno a Roma, avevano preso un appartamento estivo in uno degli hotel della città montana, quando la popolazione, dopo l’esempio di altre città dello Stato Pontificio,negò la sua fedeltà al Papa in favore del regno di Sardegna.
Instant measures were taken … to secure the usual protection from Turin and … was announced that a detachment of some two thousands papal troops was approaching by forced marches to reduce them.
Furono prese immediatamente delle misure da parte di Torino per garantire protezione al popolo di Perugia e fu comunicato che circa 2000 soldati delle truppe papali si stavano avvicinando alla città
Though having inadequate means of defence, the people determined to hold out: the gates were closed, and the demand to surrender was met with a perentory refusal and such means of resistence as could be improvised. After a desperate struggle outside the walls the insurgents were routed of course and the disciplined mercenaries entered the city with the aid of the army of priests and monks domiciliated at Perugia, but encountered continue opposition in the streets.
Nonostante gli scarsi mezzi di difesa il popolo perugino era determinato a tenere duro: le porte della città furono chiuse e alla richiesta di arrendersi si rispose con un rifiuto adottando tutti i mezzi possibile per evitare la resa. Dopo una disperata lotta fuori delle mura i perugini furono sconfitti e i mercenari entrarono nella città con l’aiuto dei monaci e preti che vi risiedevano, ma incontrarono una forte opposizione nelle strade.
In the midts of costernation the proprietors of the hotels assured their guests of the safety of these asylums, but the infuriated troops appeared to have repudiated the law and rushed at will into all houses, committing shocking murders and other barbarities upon the defenceless inmates, men and women and children.
In mezzo alla costernazione i proprietari degli hotel assicurarono ai loro ospiti un riparo ma le truppe infuriate parevano aver ripudiato ogni legge e irrompevano a volontà in tutte le case, commettendo omicidi scioccanti e altri atti di barbarie sugli ospiti indifesi, uomini donne e bambini.
The ladies of Mr Perkin’s family sought refuge in a small closet in one of their apartments while he kept watch and ward. But all human efforts to protect the hotel proved unavailing, a squad of the raging ruffians rushed through the apartments crying vengeance and committed three or four murders with the bayonets, including a mother with a child in her arms and, I believe, one of the proprietors.
Le signore della famiglia Perkins si rifugiarono in uno sgabuzzino mentre il sig. Perkins faceva la guardia. Ma gli sforzi per proteggere l’hotel furono vani. Una squadra di mascalzoni irruppe nell’appartamento gridando vendetta e commettendo tre o quattro omicidi, compresa una mamma con un bambino in braccio e,credo, uno dei proprietari.
The retreat of our friends was discovered but Mr Perkins succeeded, with the aid of gold, , in conciliating one of the ruffians, … who appeared to be a Swiss, speaking French fluently and warded off the violence of his comrades, assuring them that the party were Americans and must be respected, and so the house was relieved. This was at about 5 in the afternoon.
Il nascondiglio dei nostri amici fu scoperto ma il sig. Perkins riuscì a corrompere con dell’oro uno dei mascalzoni, uno svizzero che parlava bene francese e che convinse i suoi compagni a non commettere violenze contro il gruppo di americani. Questo avvenne verso le 5 del pomeriggio.
Soon after 6 o’clock the hotel was re-entered by another squad evidently drunk with wine, from whose conversation it appeared that the troops had been dismissed for two hours with leave to sack the city! The trunks of our friends were violently broken in common with everything else in the house and they were ruthllessly robbed of clothing, jewelry and whatever else the ruffians deemed of any value…
Poco dopo le 6 una nuova squadra di soldati evidentemente ubriachi entrò nell’hotel, e si capì che le truppe erano state congedate per due ore con il permesso di saccheggiare la città! Il baule dei nostri amici fu forzato e loro furono derubati di vestiti, gioielli e qualsiasi cosa i soldati ritenessero di valore.
Mr Perkins made instant arrangements to get out of the place… and reached this city the day before yesterday…
Il sig. Perkins cercò di andarsene da quel luogo quanto prima… e raggiunse questa città (Firenze) l’altro ieri…
Mr Perkins has formally presented the case to the American Ministery at Rome – Mr Stockon- who has, as I am told, made a demand on the papal Government of $2000 for the actual damages sustained. The brutality of the troops, especially towards unoffending strangers whose person and property should have been sacred, admits no apology…
Il sig. Perkins ha formalmente presentato il caso al ministero americano a Roma nella persona del sig. Stockon che, come mi viene detto, ha fatto richiesta per un risarcimento di 2000 dollari per i danni subiti. La brutalità delle truppe, specialmente verso inoffensivi stranieri la cui persona e le cui proprietà erano inviolabili, non ammette scuse.
The conduct of the troops has excited the deepest emotion in every circle throughout the country. All parties unite in denouncing the Papal authorities, and there is a universal cry for vengeance…
La condotta delle truppe ha sollevato una grande emozione in tutto il paese. Tutti si uniscono nel denunciare l’autorità papale e c’è una richiesta unanime di vendetta…
Perugia, as you may remember, is the third city in the Pope’s dominions. Though the population – once over 40000- has been reduced to less than 15000, it has a university, 103 churches and 30 regular monasteries and nunneries. Many of the paintings of Perugino, and some few early specimens of his great pupil Raphael, still adorn it temples.
Perugia, come ricorderete, è la terza città dello Stato Pontificio. Nonostante la sua popolazione – una volta sopra i 40000- sia ora diminuita a meno di 15000, essa ha un’università, 103 chiese e 30 monasteri e conventi. Molti dipinti del Perugino e alcuni bozzetti del suo allievo Raffaello, ancora adornano alcuni edifici sacri.
