Science for PLT Trades

Course Description

Science is only one way to understand the world around us. It is useful to plan and predict isolated physical events, for example, how heavy of a load will this sling hold? What science often struggles with is understanding the interconnectedness of things. Indigenous ways of knowing are often more useful in this regard, however, this course will focus on science. Many activities you do as a powerline technician will be understood through and guided by science, so this course will introduce you to analyzing forces, simple machines, electricity, and heat.

Learning Outcomes

1. Describe and predict outcomes of systems using linear mechanics.

2. Solve physical problems using knowledge of simple machines.

3. Describe the nature of electricity in terms of matter and electrons.

4. Describe and predict outcomes of systems involving heat and temperature.

5. Solve equations and scenarios related to AC and DC circuits.

6. Apply the laws of voltage, current, and resistance to solve power problems.
