Module 14: The steps I need to take to become the teacher/professional I want to be are _____.

“To me, disability is not a monolith, nor is it a clear-cut binary of disabled and nondisabled. Disability is mutable and ever-evolving. Disability is both apparent and nonapparent. Disability is pain, struggle, brilliance, abundance, and joy. Disability is sociopolitical, cultural, and biological. Being visible and claiming a disabled identity brings risks as much as it brings pride.” (Wong, 2020, p. 22)

Overview

A Message From Shaheen

As the Guidebook comes to a close, we circle back to the overarching question: how can teachers create learning environments that value and embrace diverse disabled students? In this module, you will wrap up the self-directed learning you have been doing over the last two modules (exploring the topics you identified).

Thanks for dedicating time to deepening your knowledge of disability and learning.

FAQ

Q1: Could a teacher’s values and teaching practices evolve over time?

A1: Absolutely. In fact, we would say that a teacher’s approach and values should shift over time. Because teachers should always be learning. And, as we learn things we should put them into practice. How much your values and approach shift over time will depend on where you are now and what kinds of things you learn over time. The key takeaway is to keep learning.
