Module 13: To become the teacher I want to be, I need to learn more about _____.
“Oriented by complexivist and ecological discourses, teaching and learning seem to be more about expanding the space of the possible and creating the conditions for the emergence of the as-yet unimagined, rather than about perpetuating entrenched habits of interpretation. Teaching and learning are not about convergence onto a preexistent truth, but about divergence—about broadening what is knowable, doable, and beable. The emphasis is not on what is, but on what might be brought forth. Thus learning comes to be understood as a recursively elaborative process of opening up new spaces of possibility by exploring current spaces.” (Davis, 2004, p. 180)
Overview
A Message From Shaheen
During the Module 12 Reflect component, you brainstormed about the knowledge you need to develop to support your future disabled students/clients. In Modules 13 and 14, we give you a loose “choose your own adventure” framework. In this module, you will identify some Engage sources that you want to check out and begin examining those sources.

You Pick
For Module 13 & 14, the Engage component is largely a “choose your own adventure.” Your adventure is to identify sources that will help you to develop the knowledge that you identified in the Module 12 Reflect component. To identify appropriate sources, consider the following actions:
- Look back at Engage sources from previous modules that you have not yet engaged with. Perhaps you earmarked a few to check out later.
- Use your favorite search engine
- Reach out to your peers
Reflect
Use the prompt below as a jumping off point. Do not let the prompts confine your reflection.
- Start synthesizing what you are learning. Do whatever works best for you to remember, digest, and process what you are learning. Examples: copy your notes into your journal, draw a concept map, write down your favorite quotes, draw something, think aloud and record your thoughts, or whatever works even better for you.
Chat
Use the prompt below as a jumping off point for a conversation with others in your class or community.
One of the best ways to learn is to teach! Share some of what you’ve been learning with your peers.

FAQ
Q1: How do you realistically make time for self-care as a teacher?
A1: In our experience, learning how to (1) care for yourself and (2) make time for that important work is an individual journey. That journey usually requires noticing what your bodymind needs, setting boundaries, and iterating your self-care practices as needed. If you want to learn more about selfcare, we recommend Dr. Pooja Lakshmin’s book Real Self-Care.
