Overall GPA (2.00)

The student’s entire coursework must have a grade point average (GPA) of 2.00 or higher. You can find this calculated on the student’s (unofficial) transcript. It’s a mystery to me what all is included and how it’s calculated. But I find that if a student meets the GPA requirements for the different parts of the degree (listed below), then they’re good to go. Literally. Out the door. Until they come back for the MBA.

Here are the GPA requirements for specific parts of the degree plans. Amanda in Advising and I have been working on incorporating these calculations into the latest degree-plan spreadsheets, so that faculty with advanced degrees don’t have to struggle with the basic arithmetic involved.

Gen Ed GPA (2.00)

The GPA for all Gen Ed coursework must be 2.00 or higher.

Junior-Candidacy (JC) GPA (2.25)

This is a set of 11 lower-level courses that includes all six lower-level business core courses plus the following Gen Ed courses:

• COMM 1315
• ECON 2301
• ENGL 1301
• ENGL 1302
• MATH 1324

It is also known as the shaded-area GPA, because these 11 courses are shaded on the degree plans. They’re found in the bottom left portion of the degree plan.

The label Junior Candidacy is a holdover from a time when we used to (try to) make BBA students earn their way into the program by passing these JC classes with a certain GPA. We had Pre-Accounting, Pre-Finance, Pre-Management, and Pre-Marketing majors who worked through their Gen Eds and the JC courses then applied to get the “real” business major (ACCT, FINA, MNGT, or MRKT).

We stopped that program but kept the JC GPA requirement as a condition for graduating with a BBA degree. So you still see references in PeopleSoft to these courses collectively as Junior Candidacy.

That GPA requirement is 2.25 or higher. PeopleSoft will do this calculation in the student’s Academic Requirements, but it’s usually wrong. Calculate it yourself (or use one of our degree-plan spreadsheets that does the calculation) to make sure.

Upper-Level Core, Capstone, & Business Electives (2.00)

Student must get a combined GPA of 2.00 in the upper-level core, the capstone course, and their business electives.

Major Courses – Minimum Grade (C)

The major courses include the

• required major courses,
• major option courses, and
• major electives.

There is no explicit GPA requirement. The student must get a C or higher in each course.
