Objective:
- Students will analyze and interpret folktales.
Materials:
- Student Journals (may be paper such as a blue book typically used for essay exams or digital, such as a Google doc or app within the LMS)
- Reading Journal Prompt Worksheet
- Korean Folk Tale: Heungboo and Holboo (video)
Introducing the Journal
Inform students that they will be keeping a journal as they read the stories in The Folktale Project. They will be able to choose different questions and passages for their responses.
To practice, show the children’s video Heunboo and Holboo at least twice. Then introduce the Reading Journal Worksheet. Students will use the worksheet to write a journal response about the video.
Share responses in groups. Groups select one person to share their writing.
The Reading Journal
Before assigning the story, review and discuss the pre-reading questions in class.
When reading the stories independently, encourage students to use the reading process outlined in Lesson 1. (Read each story at least three times: 1) get the gist, 2) identify vocabulary, 3) highlight or note important ideas or moments in the story.)
Assign the exercises located in Part II of the digital text (Check Your Understanding and Work with Words) if desired.
For each story assigned, ask students to complete the three parts of the Reading Journal in their blue book, notebook, or digital journal.
