This semester, The Learning Design & Support Team is launching The Teaching Hub where we will collect & share weekly stories, ideas, tips, guides & more about being a faculty member at Fleming College. It is not just a post on a web page, however. It is our community for Teaching & Learning in which we can all share & grow.
Engaging Teaching
Having a “First Class” First Class
Welcome back! Are you looking for some teaching and learning tips for your first class & beyond? Want to meet some colleagues to help you get the year started on the right foot? Want to have a one-stop-shop for (almost!) all your back to school questions? Join the Learning Design and Support Team at the Teaching and Learning Boot Camp and Get It Together Table!
Learning Technology
Emailing from your Class Roster
Curious about how you should email your students? The easiest way to communicate with your students is by using the Class Roster in Faculty Centre to email them (and to see their photos once they are uploaded after week 3). By emailing your students using the Class Roster, their email addresses are put into the BCC line of the message AND a copy of the email will be sent to your college email account. You are able to include attachments to messages sent through the class roster as well. More information AND instructions on how to use the Class Roster tool can be found here (Note: the link will download a Word file).
Policies & Procedures
Class Absence Procedure
Did you know that there is a new Class Absence Procedure at Fleming? It distinguishes between four different absence types: Sanctioned, Planned, Unexpected, and Unsubstantiated. It also provides guidelines for faculty on how to deal with these different types of student absences, and a process for students to follow.
Looking for another college Policy or Procedure to help you get ready for your first few weeks of classes? See all of Fleming’s approved policies and procedures here.
College Departments
Gone in 60 Seconds
Would you like to know more about some of the other departments the College has to offer, but not so much that you wouldn’t be willing to spend more than a minute doing so? Well, you’re in luck! Check out the New Faculty Toolkit: Gone in 60 Seconds Version where we have posted 60-second videos for various college departments telling you what they do for faculty. Each week, in the weekly Teaching Hub post, we will delve a little deeper into one of the various departments.
Services for Students
Student Orientations
Next week, students are back and in for a treat with fun orientation activities! Food! Music! Other fun stuff! Haliburton’s is on Monday (Sept 5th), Sutherland & Frost’s is on Tuesday (Sept. 6th). Check out all the details on student orientation.
Chatter
In this section, each week we will reflect, tell stories, add to and/or follow up on last week’s post. So, to give us fodder for our chatter, please post any comments you want to add below or follow up on Twitter @FlemingLDS
