An adequate diet (as laid out in Chapter 3) and exercise are the foundation of maintaining a pet pigs body condition score. The BCS chart below is from the Pennsylvania State University Extension.[1] While this chart is intended for production swine, the same principles apply to pet pig breeds. Pet pigs can be exercised in several ways. A large outdoor yard that they can root around in is ideal. If regular outdoor access is not possible, teaching the pet pig to walk on a harness at a young age can be very beneficial. This allows the pig to go on walks with the owner, much as a dog would. Jumping off furniture or other raised objects should be discouraged as pigs are prone to musculoskeletal injuries.
