Summary

While pet pig medicine can seem daunting at first, my hope is that this guide has helped display how similar pigs are to the other species treated at your clinic already. The anatomical differences can present some challenges, but they are not all that much different, just more roots on the molars and hypsodont canines. While potbelly type pigs are more common pets than commercial breeds, it should be noted that commercial breeds will actually be easier to work on than the smaller breeds since they are not brachycephalic. Once you have facilities or tools at your disposal to facilitate easy handling of swine, the most difficult parts become antibiotic use and determining proper withdrawal times, and anesthesia.
