The intent of this Guide is to provide an inclusive resource on pet pig primary care for the general practitioner. Through extensive literature and internet searches, only one other resource of this style has been found. This resource is the Pet Potbellied Pig Manual[1] by Dr. Lisle George, DVM. This Manual is originally from 1993, with updates in 2012, it provides a wealth of information, and is referenced in this Guide several times. This Guide is not meant to supersede the Manual from Dr. George, but rather serve as a more updated, current, and readily accessible Guide as there is new research and information available since 2012. Specific areas of interest in this new Guide that differ from the 2012 Manual are the Dentistry and Anesthesia sections. Dr. George’s manual does however provide a more extensive and thorough list of diseases and conditions in potbellied pigs.

Additionally, it should be noted that much of the information in this Guide is extrapolated from small animal and production swine medicine. The information compiled here is also based on the clinical experience of faculty at the University of Minnesota Large Animal Hospital. Several pet pig specific peer-reviewed articles were also referenced. The author currently has minimal experience working with pet pigs, so this guide is predominantly created through a compilation of research and experience from other professionals and institutions.
