In addition to meeting the criteria for competency as an abortion provider, a trainer must be able to:

Beginner (B): Limited fund of knowledge; requires constant assistance/supervision.

Advanced Beginner (AB): Developing independent thinking. Requires intermittent assistance. Knows limits and seeks guidance as needed.

Developing Competence (DC): Developing independent thinking. Needs intermittent assistance; knows limits, seeks guidance as needed;

Competent (C): Occasional assistance. Knows limits, seeks guidance as needed. Asks appropriate questions to advance understanding and technique.

Advanced Competence (AC): No observation required. Rare assistance. Knows limits and seeks guidance as needed. Discusses complex cases with trainer.

Pre-Procedure
Discuss RJ tenets with trainee, including importance of self reflection
Foster a supportive learning environment for trainees of diverse backgrounds and learning styles
Discuss perceived skills and training needs with learner prior to start of session and cases
Involve trainee in each aspect of case, with as much hands-on teaching as possible
Establish objectives for each training day
Encourage trainee to ask questions
Answer questions clearly, citing evidence/resources when appropriate
Use variety of teaching methods including cases, role plays, “what if” scenarios, didactics based on trainees’ learning preferences
Discuss approaches to steps of procedure
Demonstrate knowledge of site specific protocols
Review chart & informed consents
Review/interpret US, labs, history with trainee
Refrain from using gendered terms as appropriate
During Procedure
Use respectful/gender inclusive language free of medical jargon
Demonstrate non-judgmental and compassionate attitude towards patient
Demonstrate clear communication with patient
Let trainee solicit /answer patient questions
Confirm exam findings (e.g. uterine position)
Teach “no touch” technique; provides feedback
Provides feedback about trainee’s attention to patient comfort during procedure
Takes over a case when appropriate without disturbing the patient or undermining the trainee
Post-Procedure
Provides feedback to the trainee after each procedure, and at the end of session
Reviews elements of tissue exam with trainee
Reviews post procedure orders with trainee
Reviews patient’s contraceptive options (including EC) and contraindications with trainee
Models respectful attitude towards staff
Asks for feedback from trainee / peers
Models and teaches trainee attention to clinic flow
