4. MEDICATION ABORTION

Updated 2025 by Jackie Mostow, MD, Allison Slater, MD, MBE, and Ellen Stoke, MD

Medication abortion (MAB), most often through the use of mifepristone and misoprostol or misoprostol alone, provides a safe, effective method of pregnancy termination. MAB is increasingly used globally and in the United States (U.S.). It can be offered in diverse settings without special equipment. This process may allow for people to utilize abortion care where they live and may be accessible where procedural abortion care is not. It has long been utilized outside of the formal health care system for self-managed medication abortion (SMMA) (see Ch. 2: Self Managed Abortion).
