Dream First: Natural Place

Observing Moments – Step 1

Begin by observing details in a natural place of your choosing.

Before you write, spend a few moments immersed in nature, taking in the world around you. “Natural place” can be interpreted broadly, especially if you live in a city. When you’re done observing, respond to the prompt in your notebook.

  • Going outside is best, but you can make observations in your home. Even sitting with a house plant qualifies as green time, if you’re paying attention.
  • Make sure you’re observing the real world, not a nature documentary or other virtual representation on screen.

Suggested Time for Observing: 15 minutes

Suggested Time for Prompt: 5 minutes

You may want to go for a walk in the woods or spend a longer time observing, but five minutes is enough. The key is to pay attention to small details.

Process Notebook Prompt:

What did you observe? List at least three details in vivid, sensory terms.

Be specific rather than abstract or judgmental.
