Este, ese, aquel, etc., mean this… that……that over there. Of course, they are masculine, feminine, singular or plural according to the noun being pointed out.
Esto, eso and aquello are neuter demonstratives pronouns that refer to a general idea, statement or fact rather than a specific noun. They are NEVER used with nouns.
Esto me gusta. Eso no.
Eso es importante.
Esto es ridículo.
Esto de tu hermano me preocupa. Me gusta eso que usted dice.
Éste, ése, aquél, etc. are demonstrative pronouns. They are used when no nouns are used right next to them. However, you can leave the accent out if there is no confusion in the context.
Ésta es mi amiga, Ana.
Me gusta esta camisa roja. No me gusta ésa azul.
