35 Infinitives

In English, the –ing form can function as a noun: it can be the subject or direct object of a sentence or the object of a preposition. In Spanish, the only verb form that can do so is the infinitive. Compare these sentences.

Temporal clauses

Al verme me saludó. → al + infinitive (=cuando/mientras)

Tras pronunciar el discurso, volvió a su puesto. → tras + infinitive (=después de pronunciar)

No me iré antes de/hasta haber comido. = subject → antes de/hasta + infinitive

Special structures with infinitive

1. tener que / haber de + infinitive =to have to/be supposed to do something

e.g. Tenemos que salir. / Hemos de salir. (= debemos salir)   We have to leave.

2.  hay que + infinitive =It is necessary to do something.

e.g.  Hay que ir inmediatamente. (= es necesario ir)    It is necessary to go immediately.

3. ir a + infinitive = to be going to do something

e.g.  Seguramente va a llover.  Surely it is going to rain.

4.  volver a + infinitive

e.g. Vuelvo a llamarte dentro de poco. (= te llamo de nuevo)  I will ring you again shortly.

5. acabar de + infinitive=to have just done something

e.g. Acabo de echar la carta. (= la he echado hace poco)  I have just sent the letter.

6. dejar de + infinitive=to stop/quit doing something

e.g.  Por fin ha dejado de fumar. (= ya no fuma)  He has finally quit smoking.

7. llevar + duration + sin + infinitive=to have not done something for + duration

e.g. Lleva dos días sin salir de casa. (= hace dos días que no sale)  He has not been out for two days.
